Dr. David Buckman completed his Ph.D. as well as his undergraduate, master’s, and specialist degrees from the University of South Carolina. As a full-time graduate assistant, he was recognized as a Doctoral Scholar Fellow by the Southern Regional Education Board. Prior to his involvement in higher education, he served as a physical education teacher and athletic director in the South Carolina Public School System.
As a young educator, Dr. Buckman developed an interest in school leadership and understood the impact school administration could have on teaching practices, student achievement, and school culture. At that time, he envisioned himself becoming a school administrator and tackling the issues affecting local South Carolina Schools. As he matriculated through the educational leadership programs and acquired more knowledge, he began to see the big picture. He realized the importance of research in school decision making, and understood he could have a greater impact on student achievement by developing the skills necessary to conduct quality research. As a result, he accepted a position as a full-time doctoral resident in USC’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policies where he focused on school human resource practices and quantitative research methods.
Within his research, he has analyzed issues associated with school human resources practices particularly pertaining to pay, teacher and administration retention, school size, as well as personnel selection practices. He feels that school human resources is an important component of educational leadership because the quality of the school human resources department can affect not only employee morale, productivity, and performance, but also the performance of an entire organization. Other items such as teacher/principal/superintendent assessment and employee job/pay satisfaction have been known to also play an important role in the quality of a school’s learning environment. It is for these particular reasons he chose to research this area and extend our knowledge of human resource practices.
From his experiences as an educator, he truly believes that incorporating reflective practices in learning, building relationships, and urging students to constantly pursue new knowledge are integral to his teaching. He states, “As I reflect on what I find essential in my teaching practices, I feel that the constant drive to grow and evolve as an educator is most important. I enjoy building positive relationships with students as well as watching them achieve their academic and professional goals.” His teaching philosophy follows the ideals of Bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives. Using this philosophy, he promotes developing a foundation of understanding core concepts as well as making an effort to teach to the recommended three domains: 1) cognitive, 2) psychomotor, and 3) affective. He also understands not only the importance of his role in developing leaders who serve by caring for the needs of others, but also the positive impact DePaul’s Vincentian mission can have on humanity.
Dr. Buckman is truly excited about living in an urban, metropolitan environment and embracing the culture of the city. He is eager to meet his students and develop an understanding of Chicago’s school systems through their experiences as teachers and administrators. He is also excited about the new relationships and collaboration opportunities made available by being a faculty member in the Department of Leadership, Language, and Curriculum. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, attending sporting events and festivals, as well as eating great food.
